Trump Vows No Iran Strike Before Midterms as Pentagon War Plans Mount

Multiple major outlets report CENTCOM has been ordered to prepare for imminent combat operations against Iran, even as Trump publicly rules out pre-election strikes.

President Donald Trump declared Thursday that the United States will not strike Iran before the November 3 midterm elections — but the assurance landed against a backdrop of mounting evidence that the Pentagon has already been told to prepare for exactly that, with the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Axios, and The Atlantic all reporting within the past 48 hours that war plans are being actively drawn up.

The war between the US and Iran did not begin in a vacuum. The US launched its initial strikes on February 28 of this year while diplomatic talks with Tehran were still ongoing — the day after Trump publicly stated he had made no decision. A pattern exists: a full year before that, the US struck Iran near the close of Israel's June 2025 twelve-day war, despite Trump having said he would announce a decision 'in two weeks.' Al Jazeera has noted this record of misdirection in detail.

Trump posted to his Truth Social platform Thursday that Iran is in 'very bad condition' but that the US would not attack before the midterms. He also claimed that 'productive discussions' with Iran are currently underway — an identical claim, Al Jazeera notes, to the one made on February 28, the very day the US and Israel launched the opening strikes of the current war. Axios, citing US and Israeli officials, reported that the Pentagon has instructed US Central Command to prepare for imminent major combat operations. The Atlantic reported along similar lines. Trump made no reference to any such preparations in his public statement.

Striking Iran before the midterms carries political risk: the war remains deeply unpopular with the American public, according to Al Jazeera. A post-midterm resumption of hostilities may carry less electoral consequence for Trump, who is constitutionally ineligible to seek another term. Whether the current diplomatic contacts represent a genuine off-ramp or a procedural prelude to renewed military action remains unconfirmed.

The contradiction between Trump's public assurances and the reported state of Pentagon readiness mirrors, almost precisely, the sequence that preceded every prior US military strike on Iran. The midterm elections are November 3.
