Four Service Members Killed in Massive Fire at Canadian Base in Wainwright

Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that four service members from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry died and dozens more were injured in a massive fire at CFB Wainwright, overwhelming regional hospitals.

Four service members were killed and dozens more were seriously injured in a massive fire that swept through a Canadian military base in Alberta, marking one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the country's armed forces on domestic soil.

The blaze erupted Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright as fierce winds whipped flames beyond the perimeter and into the surrounding rural area, according to statements from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Reservists and soldiers from Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, who had traveled from bases across the country for scheduled military training exercises, were among the personnel caught in the disaster.

Local emergency medical resources were strained to their absolute limits as regional hospitals declared emergency 'Code Orange' designations to handle the influx of severely injured personnel. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, told CBC News that the situation was unprecedented. 'It is more patients than any of us want to count right now,' Thirsk said. 'It’s a disaster. It’s a one in every 15- to 25-year disaster.' Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh noted that the town's small medical facility was entirely unequipped for a mass-casualty incident, requiring helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to transport the wounded to facilities in Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. Cathy Keane, an Ontario mayoral candidate whose eldest son was among those critically injured, stated on Facebook that she was traveling to Alberta to be with her family.

The Canadian military announced that preliminary indicators revealed no evidence of terrorism, though a formal investigation into the exact cause of the fire remains underway. Federal buildings across the nation will fly flags at half-staff to honor the fallen reservists and soldiers.

The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that the investigation into the origin of the base fire is ongoing while casualty counts are verified.
