Four Canadian Soldiers Killed in Fast-Moving Training Range Fire at CFB Wainwright

A sudden wind shift drove a grass fire a kilometer in 36 seconds across Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, overtaking troops from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry during live-fire exercises.

Four Canadian service members were killed and 39 others injured when a fast-moving grass fire overtook an active training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in eastern Alberta.

The blaze erupted on Saturday afternoon during high-intensity combat training involving Charlie Company of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Approximately 84 soldiers were split between a grenade range and an assault area simulating enemy positions when the fire struck.

Maj. Gen. Wade Rutland stated that military officials monitored the fire for hours under the assumption it was contained before erratic winds caused it to race a kilometer in 36 seconds. The victims were identified as Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pvt. Shaun Farrell, Pvt. Aidan Goulding, and Pvt. Hayden Lykkemark. Health officials reported that 19 of the 39 hospitalized personnel remain in critical condition with severe burns across multiple regional medical facilities.

The affected battalion was undergoing preparations for rapid deployment to global crises alongside upcoming rotations to reinforce Canadian positions in Latvia. Prime Minister Mark Carney termed the incident one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the Canadian Armed Forces on domestic soil, prompting national flags to be lowered to half-mast.

An official investigation into the ignition source of the grass fire remains underway by defense authorities.
