Trump Declares 'Energy Ceasefire' Between Russia and Ukraine; Neither Side Has Confirmed It

The White House offered no details beyond a Truth Social post. Kyiv says it's waiting. Moscow has said nothing.

President Donald Trump declared on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate "energy ceasefire," ordering both sides not to break it — but as of this reporting, neither government has confirmed the pact on its own terms.

Trump's proclamation lands against a combustible backdrop: energy costs are soaring globally amid the U.S. war with Iran, and a halt to the exchange of strikes on energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine could, in theory, ease the oil and gas crunch heading into winter. The White House, when pressed by CNBC for details, referred the outlet back to the social media post and nothing more.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stopped well short of confirmation. "Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well," he wrote in a social media post, adding: "We are awaiting details from the American side." Russia has made no public statement on the alleged agreement, according to CNBC's reporting. Earlier this week, Zelenskyy had set his own condition: Ukraine would stop attacking oil refineries only if Russia halted strikes on Kyiv's electric grid. Trump, for his part, had this week lashed out at Zelenskyy, suggested he should be replaced, blamed him for high diesel costs ahead of November's midterm elections, and separately said he had struck a deal with Vladimir Putin to bring Russian diesel to market.

Ceasefires between Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly failed to hold since Russia's 2022 invasion, and Trump has thus far been unable to end the conflict despite repeated attempts. Whether this latest declaration amounts to a genuine agreement, a unilateral announcement, or something in between remains, at this hour, unconfirmed.

The White House has provided no mechanism, no verification, and no detail beyond the original post. Zelenskyy says Ukraine supports a ceasefire but is still awaiting specifics from Washington; Russia has made no public statement on the alleged agreement, according to CNBC.
