Fire Engulfs Hitler's Eagle's Nest Retreat as Suspect Arrested in Bavaria

A 33-year-old German man was detained by police after a fire fueled by high altitude winds largely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus above Berchtesgaden.

German police arrested a 33-year-old suspect on Saturday after a massive fire engulfed Adolf Hitler's mountaintop Eagle's Nest retreat in Bavaria.

Dispatchers in Traunstein received an automated fire alarm from the historic Kehlsteinhaus above Berchtesgaden at 21:15 local time on Friday. Roughly 200 emergency personnel and firefighters from six municipalities deployed to the remote peak, where difficult terrain, high altitude, and severe weather hampered operations.

Police apprehended the 33-year-old German citizen on a motorcycle near the scene shortly after the blaze began. Public prosecutor Rainer Vietze stated that a psychiatric evaluation concluded the man showed signs of possible mental illness, indicating diminished responsibility might be assumed. Authorities are also investigating a potential political motive, though police official Gerhart Holzinger noted there is currently nothing to suggest the involvement of further suspects. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told broadcaster BR24 that the historic site would "under no circumstances remain a ruin."

The Kehlsteinhaus sits at an elevation of roughly 1,800 metres and serves as a prominent tourist destination and memorial site. Local media reports indicate the structure has been largely destroyed by the flames.

Investigators have launched a criminal inquiry into the incident as smoke continues to rise from the mountaintop site.
