Deadly CFB Wainwright Fire Ignited on Grenade Range as Firefighters Blocked by Safety Rules

A training exercise on an automatic grenade launcher range sparked the fast-moving blaze that killed four Canadian service members and injured dozens more, military officials disclosed.

A live-fire grenade exercise on an Alberta military base triggered the devastating blaze that claimed the lives of four Canadian soldiers last week, senior military officials confirmed.

The October 17 fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright broke out during high-intensity combat training involving troops from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. Eighty-four soldiers were splitting time between a grenade range and an area designated for simulated enemy assaults when high winds swept across the dry prairie landscape.

Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan, commander of the Canadian Forces Military Police Group, stated that the fire originated on the base's automatic grenade launcher range. Because the blaze ignited within the range's permanent danger area, firefighters could not directly combat the flames as they grew. A sudden shift in wind direction and velocity drove the fire across the base at dangerous speeds, overtaking units stationed nearby. Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the fire jumped roughly half a mile in under a minute.

Four service members died in the disaster, and 39 others sustained injuries, leaving 27 hospitalized in serious condition. The soldiers were conducting pre-deployment exercises ahead of a scheduled rotation to Latvia, where Canada maintains its largest international military operation. Military authorities have launched a broad board of inquiry to examine training protocols, wind assessments, and range safety restrictions.

Investigators have ruled out natural gas infrastructure as the source of the fire, while funerals for the fallen service members are underway across Alberta.
